Zenless Zone Zero: Battery Charge energy system explained

Fuel up.

Zenless Zone Zero is a new game from HoYoverse, the creators of popular games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. Like with these games, Zenless Zone Zero has its own energy system that dictates how much you can play. Here’s Zenless Zone Zero’s energy system explained.

Zenless Zone Zero is similar to Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail with its unique energy system. In order to play the game, you’ll need energy (or Battery Charge as it’s referred to in-game.) Battery Charge is similar to Resin or Fuel in Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail respectively. However, Zenless Zone Zero has some quirks in its energy system that its sister games do not have.

To participate in different areas of the game, such as the VR Testing Machine, you’ll need to spend Battery Charge. Unlike the other HoYoverse games, this includes participating in the game’s main story. Each commission requires you to spend 20 Battery Charge per run, gating how much of the story you can actually complete. Meanwhile, the VR Testing Machine requires 50 Battery Charges per run.

How to gain more Battery Charge

To get more Battery Charge in Zenless Zone Zero, you’ll usually have to just wait for it to passively refill. You gain one Battery Charge point every 5 minutes, meaning it’ll typically take a full day for your Battery Charge to refill back to full. However, there are other ways to obtain Battery Charge.

A cheap way to get more Battery Charge is to go to the Coffee Shop and purchase drinks that refill your Battery Charge. This is a relatively cheap way to gain more energy, especially as you can use in-game currency to buy these items. You can also use Ether Battery, a consumable item that refills 100 Battery Charge.

There’s a small controversy about Battery Charge in Zenless Zone Zero, as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail both do not require you to use energy to play out the main story. I’m still getting used to how everything works in Zenless Zone Zero, and the ability to freely purchase more Battery Charge makes me hopeful that this won’t be a huge deal. Still, we’ll have to see how everything pans out in the future.
