How to capture animals in Once Human
The capturing and taming process of Once Human isn’t too complicated, although it may involve some intricacy in your approach.
To capture an animal in Once Human, you need to whittle its health down and use a Tranquilizer Throwing Needle, available through the Animal Capture research in Logistics.
You’ll notice that each animal has a small white line in their health bar. This indicates the level of health you’ll need them to lose before you can capture them. Be very careful, as you may need to bring weaker weapons with you if you’re a high level.
Once you’ve hurt the animal past the white line, you can use the Tranquilizer Throwing Needle to instantly incapacitate it, which is when you can approach the animal and… take it into your inventory.
That’s right! Once it’s knocked out, approach it and interact with the animal to capture it by putting it in your inventory. With the animal captured, we can now focus on taming them.
How to tame animals in Once Human
To tame a captured animal in Once Human, you’ll need to first build a pen for them.
There’s been reports from players saying that complete structures aren’t working when it comes to housing these animals, so you may simply need to throw up a small pen with walls only, no foundations or a roof.
In this pen, you’ll need to place a Trough, that can be researched through Animal Taming, also in Logistics just under Animal Capture. You’ll also unlock four different types of animal feed that you can put into the trough.
Each animal has their own diet and favorite food, so you should plan ahead and get some foods ready for the types of animals you want to have around your base. For predators, raw or cooked meats also works just fine.
Until the captured animal is completely tamed, don’t pair them together. Keep all captured animals separate else they may try to kill each other.
With your captured animal placed inside a pen, the taming process will begin. Over time, the animals become more and more tamed as they get fed. The moment it’s tamed, you can release the animal, and it’ll stay local to your base.
Note that tamed animals will run away if you can’t keep on top of their food intake.
How to breed animals in Once Human
Currently, there is no breeding mechanic in Once Human. They will add it soon, at which point we’ll update this article.
The sex of each animal is available, so it may be worth gathering pairs if you want to breed them later to save the leg work for when the update comes out.
How animal characterization traits work in Once Human
As animals become more tame, through being looked after over time, they’ll unlock characteristics. These are extra buffs that make them more powerful and useful, so if you want your animals to be on the top of their game, you’ll need to make sure they’re well-fed.
An animal’s grade will determine how many characteristics they can unlock:
Animal Grade | Characteristics Available | Required Tameness Levels |
---|---|---|
A | 3 | 20, 50, 80 |
B | 2 | 20, 50 |
C | 1 | 20 |
As animals increase their tameness, through being looked after over time, they will unlock more characteristics.
Some of these characteristics will enhance the drops that specific animal will drop should you slaughter them, and other characteristics give you passive buffs, although they aren’t currently working as intended.
As the animal system gets updated, the characteristics will get more fleshed out and much more useful, but currently, they can mostly be ignored.
Now that you know all you need to know about animal taming and breeding in Once Human, you can begin your own animal kingdom. Whilst you’re running around finding these animals, you may as well also grab any local food recipes.
